We will no longer be doormats to the rest of the sporting world.
We will remain polite. We will remain soft-spoken... and reserved in our general behaviuour. But we will fight with every drop of blood that flows through our frozen capillaries. We will no longer be the brides maid to the Russians... or Americans.... or Swiss or Germans. We will wave giant Canadian flags from Corner-brook to Chilliwack.... and all parts between.
We will happily stop in the street to give them directions to a Tim Hortons or ATM machine. We will not cheat.... this time.... but we will use every legal loophole to ensure our athletes have the best chance of winning.
We will skate... and ski... and jump.... and slide.... and race like we have never done so before. We will congratulate others on their accomplishments.... and then.... arm-in-arm..... raise our home-grown heroes on our shoulders and parade them through the streets.
We will be civil. We will casually and happily explain the true story to our Italian and Spanish visitors about polar bears and moose wandering the streets of Vancouver.... and tell them that only some Canadians live in igloos.... but not most.
We will show the world that bacon and maple syrup go with everything. We will show them that cultural diversity can work in a land of peace.
We will introduce Scandanavians to the best beer on the planet. They will wake up from that... a little shaky.... to the best cup of coffee in the world.
We will continue to make fun of ourselves... and wear funny toques... and paint our faces..... and say ‘out and about’ to Americans so that they can laugh at our accents. Then we'll mash them into the corner and steal the puck and score.
We will no longer apologize for winning. We will no longer expect mediocraty. We will not be complacent when we miss the podium. We will be overjoyed when we stand atop... alone.
We will shed a new.... proudly bright light on Canada. We will shake the world from its image of our land... and our people..... and re-define... even... the mirror in which Canadians view themselves. We will surprise even ourselves with our talent... success and enthusiasm.
We will show the world that we are a world player.... one deserving of a much higher regard than we currently get.
We will host these olympic games..... better than anyone before us.
And we will do it with pride....
